How to Get Things Done When Your Brain is a Pile of Unseasoned Linguine

Every time I stare at the screen like a dummy (like I am right now), I have to remember:

IT'S BECAUSE I DIDN'T SLEEP LAST NIGHT.

That's always the reason. Zero creativity? Zero original thoughts? Zero ability to, like, get things done?

I have to remember it's because I was up since 2am thinking about Discourse. Yes, the forum app. (What do you think about in the middle of the night, lol???) And also the wallpaper I bought for the guest cottage. There are VERY LARGE CRANES. Will the cranes be too big for the tiny second bedroom? Will Bancha be too dark on the ceiling? Will I be repainting this in 2 weeks?!?!?!? (With a pinched nerve in my neck, haha?)

Here's the mockup I made:

There is a bigger primary bedroom that's bright and sunny and spacious, but that is not this bedroom. No, no, this bedroom is a miniature fun-size snack of a bedroom. And so, why not order some outrageous wallpaper from Sweden for it?

(Did you know that Sweden is the wallpaper capital of the world? OH YES. Even British luxury brands like House of Hackney have their wallpaper printed and sent directly from Sweden. 🤫)

So, anyway: anytime I'm feeling completely eyes-glazed-over-and-totally-brain-dead—like today—I have to remember that: a) I am not a colossal hamrod. b) I will have good ideas again! And c) And, I have tools. Tooooooooolllllsssssss!

So you know what I did today?

I used Claude to (finally) do a bunch of technical tasks that needed to get done, such as:

  • Create a new skill + scheduled task that automatically checks to see if I've published any new content on my website, and then repurposes that content into 5 different LinkedIn posts for me to choose from—and puts them in my drafts in Buffer (where later I can review, edit, and publish).
  • Go through my hard drive and organize and delete any huge files over 50MB that I've downloaded that I no longer need (it gives me a list first, and I approve—and NOTHING is more satisfying than hearing the sound of the trash can over and over and over again while you sit there ON YOUR HIGH HORSE 😆).
  • Cross reference past buyers in Kit and build a "most likely to buy" segment from non-buyers who match.
  • Create new skills in Claude based on my own classes & methodologies! 🎓 For example, training it on the process I use to find, articulate, and nail my messaging. And training it on a skill to come up with creative, interesting brand names using the 5 methods I outline here in this post (because we don't want "unseasoned linguine energy," lolllll).

Here's the kind of thing you get to do when you make skills inside of Claude, btw. It's super fun.

RIGHT?

It's like having the most proactive employee in the world, giving you orders, instead of the other way around. #dreamscenario

So even though I've had unseasoned linguine energy all day? 🍝

I actually accomplished a hell of a lot.

Now if only I could train Claude to stand in a fun-size bedroom and decide whether six-foot Swedish cranes are a bold statement piece or the kind of thing you'd find in a nursery next to a hand-lettered sign that says "Dream Big, Little One."

And then paint the damn ceiling.

After all, I'm only human.

You know what's weird? The only things I Google anymore are the hours for restaurants and, like, antique shops. (Okay, fine: and probably wine shops.) Like yesterday. In the Catskills. This ******* place didn't open until noon. (And then I was so disappointed, because it was less antiques and more "here are some vinyl records that will make you look very, very Brooklyn cool.") (I mean, I want to look very, very Brooklyn cool, too, but I ALSO want a vintage oak apothecary cabinet that smells...

Photoshoots are SO MUCH FUN. 📸 That said, they are also one of those things you put off like you put off writing your will: not that you don't need one, but you're always waiting for some imaginary far-off time in the future when you have the gumption, the time, the headspace. Ha. And yet! Amateur headshots are still one of the #1 things that absolutely murder conversions on small business websites. They totally drag the whole thing down to the pits of hell and wreck all your hopes and...

It's SO embarrassing when someone stops by and you've got 4 different paint colors slobbered all over the wall, a stack of boxes piling up in the corner, dishes in the sink, and a half-eaten box of chicken nuggets sitting on the counter. (No one was supposed to see you eat those.) My mother would have never been caught dead in in that situation, loafing around the house in sweats with a greasy, day-old ponytail. She was the kind of woman that kept a loaf of Italian bread in the freezer at all...
